India's Supreme Court on Friday officially blamed former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesman Nupur Sharma for stoking tensions with his comments about the Prophet Muhammad.
Nupur Sharma's offensive remarks during a TV debate earlier this month sparked massive protests in India and several Gulf States summoned Indian diplomats to issue a stern rebuke.
"He and his loose tongue have set the country on fire," said the judges of the Supreme Court, quoted from NDTV, Sunday (3/7/2022).
This ruling was set as a rejection of the petition filed by Nupur Sharma for his efforts to escape the police law. The Supreme Court said the female politician should apologize to the state.
"The way she sparked emotions across the country. This woman is solely responsible for what is happening in this country," the Supreme Court justices added.
In addition, the Supreme Court also rejected Nupur Sharma's petition to merge the police complaints filed against him across the country into one. The court also rejected Nupur Sharma's arguments about "equal treatment" and "no discrimination".
"He actually has a loose tongue and has made all sorts of irresponsible statements on television and set the whole country on fire. However, he claims to be a lawyer 10 years old," said the Supreme Court.
"He should immediately apologize for his comments to the whole country," they continued.
In a petition filed on behalf of "NV Sharma", the suspended BJP politician claimed that his video comments were "roguely fabricated" and "shared by anti-social elements".
