Public Reactions to President Donald Trump's Speech in Congress
This morning, the public is reacting to President Donald Trump’s address before Congress and the nation. The main focus of the speech was the renewal of the "American Dream." CBS reporter Natalie Bran highlights the two-hour speech and the issues discussed.
President Donald Trump received a rousing reception from Republicans with the statement, "America is back." However, from the Democrats, there was dissent. Texas Congressman Al Green was escorted out just minutes after the speech began, with an announcement that lawmakers must uphold order during the session.
In his speech, Trump urged Congress to immediately approve additional funding for border security. “The American people expect Congress to send me this funding without delay,” he emphasized.
He also reaffirmed his policy of cutting federal government spending by announcing a freeze on new hires in all federal agencies, a halt on new regulations, and a suspension of foreign aid.
Following last Friday’s tensions, Trump highlighted a new letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stating that Ukraine is ready to negotiate for lasting peace as soon as possible.
The President also announced that one of the suspected masterminds behind the 2021 bombing attack that killed 13 U.S. service members outside Kabul Airport in Afghanistan had been arrested.
Economy as the Main Focus
Trump defended his new tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China. He also pledged to impose reciprocal tariffs on other countries starting next month. “Tariffs are about making America rich again and making America great again. There might be some disruption, but we are prepared for it,” he said.
Meanwhile, Democratic Senator from Michigan, Alysa Slotkin, responded by stating that Americans want change, but there is a responsible way and a reckless way to achieve it.
A CBS News poll showed that the majority of viewers—who were predominantly Republican—approved of Trump's speech.
